Kyle Davis, The Contrarian Teen Mental Health Therapist

Kyle Davis and Family Grand Junction Colorado

As we roll into summer time, we would like to formally welcome in our new counselor, Kyle, by giving YOU our audience a chance to learn more about him as an individual and counselor in and outside of the office. We believe it's important for you to get to know us as counselors at Identity to better understand how our lives have shaped our approach to counseling others and why we've chosen the field we did.

Describe who you are outside of being a counselor.

"If you were to ask anyone in my family about me as a kid, they would probably tell you that I have always been a little on the rebellious side, eager to grow up, and a bit of a contrarian. As an adult, I think it is safe to say that I still harbor those characteristics, though they now manifest in a more mature way. I would even go so far as to say that they help make me a more effective counselor!

I am a husband to an amazing wife, father to two astonishingly beautiful sons, older brother to two of my best friends, and a son to parents who deserve an award for putting up with me and my childhood antics! My primary hobby is music; writing, performing, listening to, and collecting. I am an avid reader and am always looking for something new to learn!" What is your favorite quote?

“Our individuality is all, all, that we have. There are those who barter it for security, those who repress it for what they believe is the betterment of the whole society, but blessed in the twinkle of the morning star is the one who nurtures it and rides it in, in grace and love and wit, from peculiar station to peculiar station along life's bittersweet route.” – Tom Robbins What is your favorite recipe?

"Any iteration of Cajun Mac and Cheese! The spicier the better!" What is your favorite podcast?

"I listen to TOO MANY podcasts! My favorites are Comedy Bang Bang, Spontaneation, Risk, The Truth, Hardcore History, Tangentially Speaking with Christopher Ryan, and The Joe Rogan Experience." What coping skill do you enjoy to help relax?

"After a stressful day, I enjoy throwing some vinyl on the turntable while I organize and catalog my music collection."

Why made you decide to get into counseling?

"Counseling sort of fell into my lap! I was offered a job working with at-risk youth, and since I wasn’t too satisfied with my job at that point, I went ahead and tried it out. As it happened, I learned that not only was the act of counseling fun, but also that I seemed to have a natural proclivity towards it! It was a field that fed into my desire to be challenged, while also mandating that I place an emphasis on my own personal growth and development. What’s not to like?!"

What have you learned from counseling adolescents?

"Every behavior has a purpose. The more we can slow down to look for the deeper purpose in the behavior of ourselves and others, the better and stronger our relationships can become."
